Green Tips #15 – Sustainable Playground Equipment

By Jason Giovannettone, Director of Climate and Sustainability for the Sisters of Mercy

In looking at potential future projects for your school’s eco-action plan, another example for daycare and preschool programs and elementary schools pertains to the sustainability of your school’s playground equipment.

Did You Know?

  • Playground equipment is typically made from non-recyclable plastics and metals, the production/disposal of which contributes to carbon emissions, deforestation, water usage, and landfill waste. (source)
  • Safety surfaces within playgrounds are often made from rubber or synthetic turf, which can also involve serious environmental concerns.
  • Options for sustainable materials include recycled plastic, responsibly sourced (i.e., FSC-certified) wood, and natural materials (e.g., water, stone, sand). Rubber from recycled tires or wood can also be used to create safety surfaces for playgrounds.

What Can Your School Do?

Your school can fulfill upcoming plans for new playground equipment by considering companies that use recycled plastics, responsibly sourced wood, recycled rubber, and/or natural materials. Examples of companies to consider include Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds, KOMPAN, Norna Playgrounds, and PDPlay.

What Can I Do?

Looking to take action in your community? Promote the idea of a sustainable playground and the companies listed above to your local park or neighborhood. Feel free to contact us at mercyedu@sistersofmercy.org with any questions or comments.
