Join the Mercy Education Earth Challenge
In December 2021, the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas enrolled in the Vatican’s Laudato Si’ Action Platform, a commitment to join the worldwide Catholic community in responding to Pope Francis’ appeal to participate in a seven-year journey toward sustainability and integral ecology. As a ministry of the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Education is committed to furthering the goals of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform in order to respond to the cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor.
For 2024, Year 3 of the Laudato Si’ Action Platform, all Mercy Education member schools are encouraged to choose at least one project to undertake in anticipation of Earth Day on Monday, April 22, 2024.
Who: Anyone person or group from a Mercy school community can commit to an Earth Challenge. It can be led by administration, faculty/staff, student leadership, student environment clubs, etc. A school may take on multiple Earth Challenges if desired, i.e. one per grade.
What: Check out our guide for 20 suggested Earth Challenges! You can use or adapt one of these projects or develop your own project that will be meaningful to your school community. Please consider how to assess results for the project(s) you choose.
When: The project(s) should be initiated by April 22, 2024, but there is no deadline for completion.
The April 2024 issue of Mercy Impact will highlight the Earth Challenge commitments undertaken by our member schools. Schools will be asked to submit a brief description of their project(s), including any progress toward their goal(s), along with a photo.
We are here to help! Please contact Mercy Education if you need help planning your project. We can connect you to resources within the Mercy community.
