Faith in Action: Mercy Rallies for Justice

In response to growing threats to democracy, immigrants, and the most vulnerable among us, Sisters of Mercy, associates, companions and coworkers joined Hands Off! rallies across the United States on April 5, raising their voices in unabashed protest. Their presence in states from California to Connecticut reflected Mercy’s deep and enduring commitment to justice and human dignity.

These peacefully conducted rallies called attention to a wide range of urgent concerns, including the deportation of international students; crackdowns on immigrants; the elimination of diversity, equity and inclusion programs; policies that undermine the protection of the environment; and a rising number of threats of violence against women.

As Sister Terri Bednarz, RSM, of the Institute Leadership Team shared in a recent interview with the National Catholic Reporter, “It’s expressing Gospel values. It’s a prophetic voice, as Jesus would have wanted us to do — protect the vulnerable and do it in a peaceful and nonviolent way.” Read the article here.

In this Jubilee Year of Hope, let us continue to pray and work for a world where justice, dignity and mercy prevail.
