Alpha’s Internet Access Program Helps Students Stay Connected
The sudden closing of classes at Alpha Institute (Kingston, Jamaica) has required staff, students and their families to adapt to the new education format. The transition online has also exposed a digital divide. Unequal access to the internet is compounded when students do not have a computer or phone of their own. For those that do have the tools and access, embracing the digital form of communication and learning is difficult. Any one of these issues can be a challenge and disruptive to families already under economic stress.
Alpha administration has found they can achieve the best outcome by providing tools and/or financial assistance complemented by counselling and capacity-building. In this way, the Internet Access Project at Alpha Institute is focused on helping students connect to the internet and empowering students and families to adapt to the new normal. The Internet Access Project helps students join the information highway and makes sure students know where to go, at what speed and what their responsibilities are.
Sharon Pryce, Director of Assessment and Counseling at Alpha’s Oscar Romero Centre for Youth, says the Internet Access Project is making an important and immediate impact.
“Alpha Institute extends heartfelt gratitude to our sponsors for partnering with us through the Internet Access Project,” said Sharon. “This has allowed students to continue their education despite the physical disruption and the financial challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The recipients and their parents are appreciative of the difference you have made.”
Through the Internet Access Project, Alpha is also able to assist parents or siblings of Alpha students who are struggling to take on the added financial cost for the student. Much like Alpha’s holistic program on campus, the Internet Access Project offers essential assistance toward completing their education and empowers students and their families by helping them to learn how to manage the situation going forward.
